The Motivation Of Students In Official Language Schools: An Approach

In this article1 we intend to explore the motivation and attention to the diversity of adult students in Official Language Schools of Galicia through the Possible Selves theory developed by H. Markus and P. Nurius in 1986. The main objective is to understand how positive and negative manifestations of oneself can influence motivation and success in language learning in these educational centers, with the intention of allowing teachers to develop effective approaches, strategies and dynamics to improve student motivation and performance. Fifty-five students from the Official Schools of Galicia participated in the study, 5 of whom were students with special educational needs (SEN). Through an open-ended questionnaire, they generated Possible Selves in three different sections: contextual questions, questions about self-perception, and attention to diversity. From the study it is concluded that the students at the Official Language Schools generally present a high motivation, which generates that they take part in their personal teaching process. It also deduces the need to promote the self-knowledge of the students, especially with reference to the negative manifestations of the Possible Selves
