Abstract

The purpose of this article is to provide a review of the theoretical and methodological contributions that have been made to intercultural competence. For this, the methodological strategy was developed with an analysis of qualitative and interpretative, documentary design, built from the state of the art. Starting from interculturality, it can be seen that it is not exclusive to a particular field, since it is used and worked on from various disciplines such as human and social sciences. Within the framework of education, several authors who have acted as promoters of interculturality in language teaching have made evident the contrast to the model of civilisation, taking a position as a new part of culture that implies the development of skills and knowledge that enable the learner to regulate their relationships with people belonging to cultures different from their own. After identifying various authors' classifications of intercultural competence, each of the typologies was analyzed and a new classification was then integrated with its main elements.  Therefore, four dimensions of intercultural competence emerged: symbolic, communicative, behavioural and personal. These are intended to make it possible to analyze the level of development of intercultural competence developed by foreign language learners.
