Title: The past, present and future of adult education
Over the last 50 years, adult education policies and practices have changed radically. The path from practices based in critical adult and popular education to current practices based in lifelong learning policies and practices has for the most part abandoned connections with community and ignored people's interests, concerns, curiosities and desires to learn as the basis of teaching and learning. Also neglected is the idea of experience as a driver of knowledge creation.
Overall, there has been a systematic devaluing of adult education as a critical, humanistic educational project that operates the interests of human personal, social and cultural development. These critical human-social orientations have been replaced by concepts and terms derived from the language of business, by educational processes that prioritise the individual over the collective, and by employment and economic needs rather than everyday lives and needs as central to adult education.
In this monographic issue we address these challenges by inviting articles on adult education work that maintains link to people's daily lives and needs and to the communities where these lives and needs are built and developed. At this educational, social and political moment of local, regional, national and global challenges, we are interested in adult education projects and activities that continue to be critical, reflexive, dialogical, and that remain focused on people and social processes of change.
