Résumé

Nous vivons dans un monde profondément troublé par le capitalisme patriarcal mondial qui a mis des vies en danger et rendu extrêmement difficile le travail critique d'éducation des adultes. En nous appuyant sur les théories de l'imagination et sur le besoin d'un imaginaire différent, nous explorons le tournant esthétique de l'éducation des adultes et, plus précisément, la manière dont les éducateurs d'adultes au Canada et dans le monde entier mobilisent des approches créatives basées sur les arts pour aborder les questions sociales et (ré)imaginer qui sont les gens et ce qu'ils peuvent voir, entendre et savoir. Nous nous concentrons sur divers exemples de travail avec des populations marginalisées dans différents contextes et institutions, y compris les communautés, les musées, les bibliothèques et les universités. Nous explorons comment les pratiques esthétiques reconfigurent la perception, perturbent les silences, regardent en arrière pour penser à l'avenir, délogent les fixations du sens commun, favorisent la démocratie culturelle et démocratisent la culture. En explorant une diversité de pratiques et de lieux, nous illustrons la variété et la portée des pratiques et des orientations pédagogiques esthétiques. Si le travail éducatif esthétique ne peut à lui seul changer le monde, nous soutenons qu'il soutient l'objectif social critique de notre domaine en encourageant de nouvelles compétences pour voir, connaître, identifier, visualiser, historiciser et démocratiser dans l'intérêt d'un monde juste pour tous.
