Abstract

This study focuses on the role of the shadow tutor in language learning for students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), where a shadow tutor is a professional who provides individualized support to these students. The research addresses the importance of this figure in the context of language teachers due to the growing need for inclusion of students with ASD in regular language classrooms. To address this issue, a mixed methodology (quali-quantitative) with a cross-sectional design was used. A total of 100 language teachers working during the 2020-2021 school year were surveyed; aspects such as gender, age, nationality, school level at which they taught and languages taught were considered for the selection of the sample. The instrument used was the "Questionnaire for the Evaluation of the Role of the Shadow Tutor in Language Learning". The results revealed that the presence of a shadow tutor is fundamental in facilitating the learning of students with CEA, with a significant improvement in communication and language skills. This crucial result highlights the importance of training shadow tutors and teachers to provide inclusive and equitable education. Work must be done on a deeper understanding of SAB and the specific needs of students with SAB. Future research can focus on training strategies for shadow tutors and teachers, as well as adapting language programs for students with ASC, thus ensuring quality education for all students.
