Raül Avilla-Royo’s visual article presents an architectural investigation based on design practice to explore how the spatial configuration of domestic environments shapes human relationships. Inspired by Robin Evans’ essay “Figures, Doors and Passages”, the author examines three key elements: the corridor, the door, and the distributor, understood as frictional spaces that mediate between privacy, encounter, and circulation. Through a “research by design” methodology, Avilla-Royo develops a conceptual matrix combining spatial types with morphological adjectives (linear, nuclear, multiple, etc.) to generate theoretical models of collective housing. These proposals are articulated through the aggregation of rooms and incorporate the possibility for housing units to expand or contract, promoting an “elastic house” adaptable to the changing needs of its inhabitants. The aim is to demonstrate how the architectural floor plan not only organises space but also shapes ways of living, social relations, and opportunities for interaction within the domestic environment.
