Resumen

Los arquitectos trabajan al servicio de los demás. Nos comprometemos a hacer realidad los sueños de otros, pero estas personas y sus sueños se han vuelto cada vez más privilegiados, y el rol del arquitecto se centra más en satisfacer las necesidades de las élites privilegiadas. Por lo tanto, la arquitectura encuentra su propósito como estilo de vida o espectáculo, pero solo para quienes pueden permitírselo o beneficiarse de él, en lugar de ser la herramienta a través de la cual manifestamos algo positivo para todas las personas en todo momento. La mayor parte de la práctica arquitectónica en el Reino Unido es cómplice de perpetuar esta cultura de producción arquitectónica, una cultura que no incentiva la creación de lugares sostenibles, duraderos, saludables, equitativos y accesibles. Preparar a los estudiantes para ejercer en esta cultura solo perpetúa esta industria insostenible e inaccesible. En cambio, este artículo propone modalidades alternativas de práctica y pedagogías asociadas que preparan a los estudiantes para ser un profesional de la arquitectura diferente. Presentará el trabajo en curso y el impacto de Other People’s Dreams, una oficina de investigación en vivo y estudio de último año de Máster de Arquitectura en la Universidad de Lancashire. El OPD colabora de forma crítica y duradera con organizaciones comunitarias del noroeste del Reino Unido que trabajan con grupos, situaciones e ideas marginadas para repensar el potencial de las personas y el lugar. Este trabajo y su contexto se utilizan como marco pedagógico para los estudiantes, quienes a menudo pertenecen a las mismas comunidades y al mismo mundo real que queremos que aborden a través de la formación y la práctica arquitectónicas.

Lee Ivett, London School of Architecture

Lee Ivett es arquitecto, académico y educador. Es director de la Escuela de Arquitectura de Londres y fundador del estudio de arquitectura participativa, arte y diseño Baxendale y del estudio de investigación de acción en vivo Other People's Dreams. OPD trabaja de forma crítica, situada y duradera con organizaciones comunitarias del noroeste de Inglaterra que exploran modos de participación con grupos marginados, situaciones e ideas para repensar el potencial de las personas y el lugar. Exploramos lo que a menudo "no se ve" en la práctica y la educación arquitectónicas: la vida cotidiana experimentada por la gente corriente. La investigación práctica de Lee se centra en lo orgánico y lo generativo, desarrollando proyectos sociales de bajo presupuesto en comunidades de todo el Reino Unido, que evolucionan de lo táctico a lo permanente.

Ecaterina Stefanescu, University of Lancashire

Profesora de Arquitectura. Licenciatura (con honores), Maestría en Arquitectura Cum Laude. Ecaterina Stefanescu es diseñadora arquitectónica, artista y académica. Trabaja en Preston, donde imparte clases de arquitectura en el Instituto de Arquitectura Grenfell-Baines y es subdirectora del Centro de Investigación sobre Migración, Diáspora y Exilio (MIDEX). Ecaterina utiliza la maquetación, la construcción en vivo y el dibujo en su trabajo artístico y de investigación para responder a las culturas materiales de las personas y como herramientas para la exploración, la investigación y la participación. Es cofundadora de Estudio ESSE, un estudio de diseño y autoconstrucción con proyectos en toda Europa. Sus intereses de investigación incluyen la creación en la participación comunitaria, la maquetación y la cultura material de los migrantes. Es ponente y escritora habitual en congresos y eventos sobre el uso de maquetas como herramienta de involucramiento con las comunidades y su trabajo ha sido expuesto a nivel nacional e internacional.
