THE TAUROMAIA OF CARMELO. THE TORO OF THE VIRGIN OF GRAZALEMA (CÁDIZ) AND THE TORO OF SAN MARCOS DE BEAS (JAÉN)
Keywords:
Bullfighting, Andalusia, Sacrifice.Abstract
It is well known amongst the scholars of the popular feast related with the bulls the different meaning that this kind of event has in spite of the final sacrifice, or not, of the bulls. This difference has caused certain polemics that still are not overcome actually, and is conditioning the understanding that one might have of the mentioned event. The playing with the bulls as they are celebrated both in Grazalema (Cádiz) and Beas de Segura (Jaén), share the characteristic that they are run tied and are not sacrificed in public at the end of the festivity. This singularity is probably due to the fact that these feasts were founded by the Carmelites and excluded, since their institutionalization, the sacrifice of the bulls.
