Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to carry out a genealogical research on the female characters that Ding Ling has portrayed from 1927 to 1948. Based on a previous study of the social-political context and the writer's life experiences, we will attempt to examine and analyze the most representative female images in her different writing periods, with the aim of revealing the existing linkage that diachronically connects the women under the writer's pen, from Miss Sophia who resorted to solitude as her last refuge, to the peasant girl Heini whose voice was silenced in the noise of the public. We will also attempt to shed light on the writer's feminist observations on the collective fate of women in the changing China during the 20 years reflected in her literary creation.
