Abstract

This article explores the use of photo-elicitation in art education through the analysis of Alfried Krupp's portrait by Arnold Newman. It discusses how this technique can foster critical thinking and visual understanding in secondary school and university students, offering a methodology to apply semiotic analysis and visual narrative in educational contexts and presenting a proposal for classroom application. The research is based on the artographic methodology, integrating the educator's perspective as an artist, researcher, and teacher. Photo-elicitation, thus understood, succeeds in developing an artistic-educational research process that fosters the understanding of photography as a cultural artifact, empowers students as creators of visual narratives, and sensitizes them to contemporary artistic expressions.

Author Biography

Guillermo Calviño-Santos, Universidad de Santiago de Compostela

In 1999 he graduated in Photography at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya and in 2011 he completed a degree in Photography and Digital Creation at the Centre de la Imatge i la Tecnologia Multimèdia of the same university.

After a decade working as a freelance photographer and teacher of photography, video and design in non-formal education, he joined as a collaborator and member of the Educational Attention Unit for High Abilities at the University of Santiago de Compostela. Subsequently, he got a position as professor of Didactics of Plastic Expression at the University of Santiago de Compostela and the University of A Coruña, returning to the USC in September 2021. He is part of the research groups, LITER21 (USC) and Artefacto (UdC) collaborating in projects that analyse learning processes in Art Education. After a time of interest in documentary photography and the various manifestations of photography in contemporary art contexts, his activity is focused on research into photography as a reflection of ways of acting and understanding the world and its application within the educational system. Photography thus becomes a medium for reflecting on the role of the image in the configuration of identity and the transformation of the public and private spaces we inhabit.
