Ownership and Governance

Hábitat y Sociedad is an interdisciplinary journal published by the University of Seville’s publishing house. It was launched in 2010, promoted by the Academic Committee of the Master's Degree in Social Habitat Management.

The governing body of Hábitat y Sociedad is its Editorial Committee, composed of researchers aligned with the journal’s focus and guided by principles of gender parity, interdisciplinarity, and international representation.

The editorial team of the journal consists of:

  • Editorial Committee
  • Editorial Team
  • Director
  • Secretary
  • Editor-in-Chief and Section Editors
  • Honor Committee
  • Advisory Board
  • Scientific Committee

Editorial Committee

The functions of the Editorial Committee are:

  • Define the editorial policy of the journal, with input from the Honorary Committee, Advisory Board, and Scientific Committee.
  • Appoint the Director and Secretary of the journal for a renewable four-year term.
  • Approve the journal's annual plan and activity report.
  • Ratify or renew members of the Editorial Team.
  • Approve appointments or departures across the journal’s various editorial bodies.

The Editorial Committee meets at least once a year to:

  • Approve the scientific and financial report for the previous year.
  • Approve the theme of the upcoming monographic issue in coordination with its editorial team.
  • Approve the journal’s annual budget.
  • Propose new appointments and departures within the Editorial, Advisory, Honorary, and Scientific.
  • Ratify or renew the editors responsible for the journal's content, including section editors (monographic issue, miscellany, and Readings, Events and Debates, L.E.D.), as well as language editors for English, French, and Portuguese.
  • Call elections for the positions of Director and Secretary of the journal.
  • Draft and approve the journal's annual improvement plan.

The approval of the journal's statutes and the ratification of the election of the Director and Secretary must be submitted to the Editorial Committee of the University of Seville.

Editorial Team

It is composed of the Director, Section Editors and those responsible for copy-editing and production.

It is responsible for the entire editorial process, from the reception of manuscripts to publication of approved articles.

Journal Director

The Director of the journal is elected from among the members of the Editorial Committee affiliated with the University of Seville, for a renewable four-year term. In the case of joint directorship, one of the co-directors may be affiliated with another institution.

The Director is ultimately responsible for implementing the journal's mission and annual plans, as approved each year by the Editorial Committee.

They consult the Advisory Board when proposing monographic themes and the coordination teams responsible for them and submit these proposals to the Editorial Committee for approval.

The Director oversees the editorial process and grants final approval for the publication of articles.

They also lead the preparation of the annual scientific and financial report, submit it to the journal’s Editorial Committee for approval, and forward it to the University of Seville’s publishing house for acknowledgement ratification.

Secretary

The Secretary assists the Director with editorial duties, planning, implementation of activities, and the preparations of reports for the journal.

They are responsible for recording the minutes of the Editorial Committee meetings and for issuing certificates related to decisions and participation in journal activities.

Section Editors

Hábitat y Sociedad includes an Editor-in-Chief, dedicated editors for each journal section, and language editors responsible for each of the journal's secondary languages: English, Portuguese, and French.

Editor

The Editor receives submitted articles, initiates the plagiarism review process, and submits each article for preliminary evaluation by members of the Editorial Team and the coordinators of the monographic issue. This assessment evaluates both the quality of the article and its alignment with the journal's editorial focus.

If the report is favourable, the Editor assigns the article to the relevant Section Editor to begin the double-blind peer review process.

Section Editors

Section Editors are responsible for overseeing the editorial process for the articles assigned to them. They select expert reviewers, request evaluation reports, liaise with both reviewers and authors, and make decisions regarding acceptance, rejection, or the need for revisions.

Once approved, articles are forwarded to the person responsible for copy editing.

Copy Editor

The Copy Editor is in charge of ensuring that all approved articles comply with the journal’s guidelines. They conduct an initial editorial review of the article and request a second review from a member of the Editorial Team.

The Copy Editor communicates with authors to request any necessary changes until the article fully complies with publication standards.

Finally, the Copy Editor recommends the article to the Director for definitive approval or rejection.

Production Coordinator

The Production Coordinator receives the final approved articles, the proposed table of contents, and the list of reviewers. They then request the page proofs from the external layout and design company.

Once received, the proofs are sent to members of the Editorial Team and to the authors for review. The Production Coordinator requests any necessary corrections from the aforementioned external company.

Once the proofs are approved and finalised, they are submitted to the University of Seville’s publishing house to request DOI activation.

Once the DOIs are active, the Production Coordinator schedules the publication of the journal issue.

Honorary Committee

It is composed of distinguished figures with recognised expertise in the field of social habitat, whose careers serve as an inspiration to the journal in fulfilling its mission.

Advisory Board

It is made up of experts in social habitat.

They advise the journal's Director on editorial policy and suggest current themes that may serve as the focus for future monographic issue.

Scientific Committee

It is composed of an interdisciplinary group of researchers specialising in the journal's areas of interest, who regularly contribute to the peer review process.
