Abstract

This study is based on a premise linked to the art of Capoeira, a practice with a long history in Brazil, whose movements (often compared to certain dances) are performed to the rhythms of various instruments. This activity is taught to pupils in the 6th grade of primary school (ages 10 to 12). The first objective of the study is to find out the opinion of two class groups with regard to the conceptualisation of art. The second objective of the study is to find out what the participants think of Capoeira as an art form. To meet the second objective, we developed a 27-session teaching proposal, 24 of them in Physical Education and three in Music. This is a case study, in which the results show that a large number of students regard Capoeira as an art form, mainly because of the difficulty of performing some of the movements quickly and in close proximity to their partners, and also because they have to follow the rhythm of the music. The music teacher confirms this idea with similar ideas.
