Editorial policy on the use of AI

Editorial Policy on the Use of Artificial Intelligence in the Workflow of Scientific Journals published by the University of Seville Press

1. Introduction

The scientific journals published by the University of Seville Press are committed to upholding scientific integrity and ensuring transparency in the use of artificial intelligence (AI). This policy sets clear guidelines regarding the proper use of AI tools for authors, reviewers, and editors.

2. General Principles

In line with COPE guidelines and best practices in the scientific community:

  • AI tools cannot be considered authors, as they are unable to assume responsibility for scientific content.
  • AI tools cannot independently manage conflicts of interest, copyright matters, or ethical decision-making.

3. Use of AI by Authors

    3.1. Declaration of Use

Authors must explicitly state the use of any AI tool in drafting or analyzing their manuscripts. They should       specify the software used, the functions performed, and the specific sections of the manuscript where AI           was employed.

   3.2. Responsibility for Originality

Authors bear full responsibility for ensuring the originality of any AI-generated or AI-assisted content. Such       content must not infringe on third-party rights or involve plagiarism.

   3.3. Review of AI-Assisted Content

Authors must carefully review and verify all AI-generated content to avoid biases, errors, or inaccuracies.

4. Use of AI in Peer Review

4.1. Declaration of AI Use by Reviewers

If reviewers utilize AI to assist in manuscript evaluation, they must disclose its use. AI can serve as a                    supplementary tool, but the final assessment and critical judgment must be made by the reviewer.

4.2. Manuscript Evaluation

AI should not replace the reviewer’s responsibility in scientific evaluation. The peer review process must be       predominantly human-driven, with AI playing only a supporting role.

5. Use of AI by the Editorial Team

The editorial team may use AI tools for administrative and editing tasks, such as manuscript formatting or plagiarism detection. However, all AI-assisted processes must undergo rigorous human supervision to ensure quality and consistency.

6. Ethical Considerations in AI Use

The use of AI must never result in data manipulation, plagiarism, or intellectual property violations. Any misuse of AI—whether intentional or accidental—will be addressed following COPE guidelines and the ethical standards of the publisher.

7. Policy Evaluation and Updates

This policy will be periodically reviewed to align with technological advancements in AI and evolving best practices in scientific publishing.

8. Consequences of Non-Compliance

Failure to comply with this policy may result in manuscript rejection, withdrawal, or future submission bans, following the procedures established by the University of Seville Press.
