Beliefs and attitudes of young university students from Antioquia, Colombia, towards andaluz

Abstract

This paper aims to describe the perception and linguistic beliefs towards the Andalusian variety by a group 108 students of University of Antioquia (Medellín, Colombia), based on results of surveys from PRECAVES XXI [Project for the study of beliefs and attitudes regarding varieties of Spanish in the 21st century]. The main results show low identification percent of Andalusian variety (just 4%) and a general association with Iberian and Caribbean varieties by students from Medellín. Likewise, Spanish spoken in Andalusia is related with well-qualified jobs, middle income level and university studies. These values are also related with Spanish varieties like Castilian, Andin, Chilean and Rioplatense. Finally, indirect assessments suggest that Andalusian variety is “rich” and “interesting” and, after their own variety, Spanish spoken in Andalusia is the most “funny” and “familiar”, although the least “close”.
