CARDINAL CIENFUEGOS’S NEOGOTHIC TOMB AT THE SEVILLE CATHEDRAL AND GESTOSO’S CRITICAL VIEWS

Abstract

The nineteenth-century tomb of Cardinal Cienfuegos, placed at the Concepcion chapel, at the cathedral of Seville, Spain, is here described and analyzed. It is a sepulchre designed by architect Manuel Portillo de Ávila in 1879, built one year later by marble builder Rafael Barrado. Three designs kept at the Royal Academy of Saint Ferdinand (Madrid) are shown and fully explained. Criticism by José Gestoso is also taken into account.
