NUEVAS PINTURAS DE LUCAS VALDÉS

Abstract

The paintings of the Sevillian artist Lucas Valdés, one of the most interesting artists of the transitional period between the seventeenth and eighteenth century local school of painting, are slowly coming to light and being identified. His style, which is a distant echo of the Baroque intensity of bis father Juan Valdés Leal, is distinguished by its tone of restraint, at times brimming over with personality. This recent discovery of six works by Lucas Valdés helps to place bis sphere of activity in both Sevilla and the city of Cadiz, where he lived from 1719 till 1725, the year of bis death.
