Abstract

The theme of education through architecture, and more specifically the construction of a critical awareness of the surrounding space, has become increasingly important on the contemporary agenda. The relevance of spatial literacy is emerging in current policies as a response to pressing issues such as resource management, sustainability, preservation of the landscape and natural and built heritage. The book Play+space=playce - Architecture Education for Children and Young People, is positioned as a fundamental element in the debate on architecture-centred education. It is the result of an initiative by the Playce network, created in 2004 in Finland with the support of the Alvar Aalto Foundation, and brings together a series of presentations given at a seminar held in 2005 where the potential of the subject was confronted and projected.

Author Biography

Margarida Louro, Universidade de Lisboa Facultad de Arquitectura: Lisboa, Lisboa, PT

Lisbon, 1970. Graduated in Architecture from the School of Architecture of the Technical University of Lisbon (FA-UTL) in 1993. Master in Contemporary Architectural Culture and Construction of Modern Society in July 1998. In April 2005, ended the Doctorate Program in Urbanism at Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Barcelona (ETSAB), with the defense of the doctoral thesis WWW.CIUDAD.CONSUMO - El Impacto de las redes de consumo en la reorganización del espacio urban contemporary del Area Metropolitana de Lisboa. Developed post-doctoral research under the theme ACT_on Metamorphosis and Transformation Urban Contemporary, in partnership with ETSAB-UPC and FA-UTL . Since 1997 is teacher at FA-UTL.
