This article aims to deal with a dimension of Leonardo Padura’s work whichis not frequently attended to by scholarly research: his essays. They are indeed
instrumental in order to get access to both the human and the literary personality of the author, which allows us to recognize the author as a reflective and freely shaped agent. Padura’s essayistic work is studied on three complementary fronts: essays of a socio-political nature, essays where he puts forward a canon for Cuban literature, and essays from which Padura approaches reality not only from his own subjective autobiographical perspective but also from testimonial and analytical stances.
