The aim of this article is to present a philological analysis of the text known as Instrucción del Relator, a letter written in 1449 by the relator Fernán Díaz de Toledo to convince the bishop of Cuenca to defend the cristianos nuevos from the first Estatuto de limpieza de sangre. The comparison between ten manuscripts (four of them ignored by the existent editions) points out the existence of two redactional phases, probably both composed by the author himself. The fact that the majority of the xvii and xviii century copies report the most extended version of the text indicate that at that time the Instrucción might have been interpretated by the readers more as a treatise than as the letter it originally was.
