After exposing the possible antecedents of the dramatic genre in the Arabic world, the reasons of its late arrival and the first Arabic references to the European theatre, this paper deals with the analyse of the life and work of the Lebanese Mārūn al-Naqqāš, estimated as the introducer of modern theatre into the Arabic world and whose pioneer task will be continued by his follow- ers in Lebanon and Syria and later in Egypt.Downloads
