Abstract

Lima is situated in a zone which suffers frequent earthquakes. We mention those of the 17th century, which were numerous and of varying intensity, that of 1687 being the most serious, for its catastrophic results. These tremors gave rise to experimentation with construction techniques until the most appropriate were found, the 17th century being one of intensive building in the city. Now firmly established as capital of the viceroyalty, great efforts were made to embellish it and endow it with great buildings to make it stand out among the cities of America.
