The construction and design of the patio of La Lonja in Seville is discussed in relation to projects carried out and "invented" by 16th century ltalian architects, and also to the construction of El Escorial. The dissemination of the ltalian architectural treatises of Palladio and Serlio in Spain, and the way in which these were interpreted by Spanish architects, is the basis of this study. A key figure in this development is Juan Bautista of Toledo, assistant architect in the construction of the Vatican, and collaborator of Michelangelo.
