Abstract

One of biggest phenomena in 21st century pop culture is the superhero movie boom. From cursed subgenre to box-office hits, these films have turned out to be vital for studying how movies have an impact on the way we see the world through them, and understand, in hindsight, real-world events. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is not only the most recognizable brand of the genre, but also the finest example of a successful transmedia franchise. In this paper, we’ll analyze the MCU within geopolitical criteria in order to find out how these films depicts and talks about sociopolitical issues that are conveyed to the audience as a whole. For that purpose, through an interdisciplinary methodology, we’ll study how they develop a discoursed focused in recreating reality in which, based on their nature as fantastic narratives, they reflect on terrorism, international relations and climate change.
