¿Qué queda actualmente de la filosofía de la naturaleza? Casi nada, porque la mayoría de los científicos y de los filósofos parece satisfacerse con una ciencia no explicativa, positivista, pragmática, oportunista, intervencionista y desmigajadora de lo real, como si el mundo estuviera desprovisto de racionalidad. Por eso este ensayo retoma ideas antiguas, hoy olvidadas, como la metafísica realista, la causalidad, la forma y la causa formal, la inteligibilidad natural y el valor de los símbolos y de las imágenes del lenguaje natural, silenciados por la eficacia predictiva de las matemáticas. La tesis principal es que la causa formal es el primer principio de la inteligibilidad natural. Desde un punto de vista aún más naturalista que aquél de Aristóteles, se trata de elucidar qué son la forma y la causa formal, cuál es el modo de presencia de la forma unida a la materia, y de qué manera el sentido del hilemorfismo es reactualizable.
« Form, a forgotten cause ». What is left now of the philosophy of nature? Almost nothing since most scientists and philosophers seem to be satisfied with a non explicative, positivistic, pragmatic, opportunist, and interventionist science which crumbles up reality, as if the world were devoid of reason and order. That is why this essay takes up again some old, forgotten ideas, such as the notions of realist metaphysics, causality, form and formal cause, natural intelligibility, and the value of symbols and images of natural language, silenced by the predictive efficacy of mathematics. The main thesis states that the formal cause is the first principle of natural intelligibility. From a point a view even more naturalist than that adopted by Aristotle, an effort is made in order to elucidate what the form and the formal cause are, how form and matter make up just one entity, and how the sense of hylomorphism can be reinterpreted.
