The present paper addresses parallels between environmental aesthetics and Japanese aesthetics surrounding the concept “aesthetic engagement”. The objective is to explore theoretical similarities but also areas of potential dissent. In this sense, this paper suggests that Japanese aesthetics draws substantial analogies with environmental aesthetics, although shifting and expanding its basic notions. Nature and architecture serve as cases of study so as to test this hypothesis. Ultimately, the paper aims to provide solutions to the question of whether it is possible to speak of Japanese environmental aesthetics.
