"En este capítulo, analizaré el concepto de lo salvaje (wildness), no principalmente como una categoría con la que clasificamos algunos fenómenos de la naturaleza, sino, más bien, como un concepto existencial que destaca fenómenos, tanto naturales como artificiales, que de alguna manera escapan a nuestro control y que, en diversos grados, son sorprendentes, emocionantes, extraños y, en casos extremos, amenazantes. Al igual que encontramos comodidad y paz, tanto en entornos naturales como humanos, encontramos lo salvaje tanto en entornos naturales como urbanos. Al ser una categoría existencial, lo salvaje es relativo a las circunstancias humanas y a los propios seres humanos. Lo que experimenta un hombre adulto finlandés como salvaje es diferente de lo que experimenta un niño de nueve años de Nueva York.
