Abstract

Between 1960 and 1962, the Dutch architect Aldo van Eyck (1918-1999) wrote The Child, the City, and the Artist, an essay that, in his words, "appeals to the imagination" and describes his poetic vision of the world and his architectural thinking. Editors Vincent Ligtelijn and Francis Strauven first published the book in 2008, in its original English version, but with some modifications that moved it away from the manuscript. In 2021, the Arquia Foundation, with Alejandro Campos Uribe as editor, have made a return journey to the original with the publication of The Child, the City and the Artist as part of its La Cimbra collection. This review presents a book that could be read in the Cortazarian manner, an essential reading for understanding the theory that underpins Van Eyck's work and which is also susceptible to illuminating multiple new interpretations.
