Abstract

The article analyzes a relatively unknown work by the Olmsted Brothers, the Alewife Brook Parkway, with the intention of clarifying certain conceptual resources in their planning style. This prolific office was founded by the sons of the landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, and they perpetuated his legacy. The proposal involves an in-depth study of a parkway project, a concept that combined infrastructure and landscape architecture and one which Olmsted applied throughout his career. A personal interpretation of this work is offered here, based on the analysis of original materials and emphasizing the visual relationships linked to its topography. Far from being one-off or sporadic, these relationships are seen to be one of the cornerstones of the project in question and of the Olmsteds’ work in general.
