The Picasso year in the Malagueta Bullring

Abstract

On the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the death of Pablo Ruíz Picasso last 2023, museums around the world organized temporary exhibitions in order to commemorate this anniversary. But apart from the museum programming, many other entities participated in this celebration, among them the Plaza de Toros de La Malagueta, a place of vital importance for the artist.

     This article analyzes various activities carried out in such an emblematic bullfighting temple, such as the Picassian Bullfight, which that year was moved to April 8, coinciding with the day of his death. That day the parade also became a kind of museum, with a group exhibition called A Picasso Vision of Bullfighting and, between February 24 to July 30, a magnificent photography exhibition called Edward Quinn took place. Picasso and the Golden Years of the Costa Azul, organized by the Malaga Provincial Council through the La Malagueta Cultural Center.
