The decline of cash: Perspectives and challenges

Resumen

This paper analyses the possible extinction of the cash from the economy and its impact, fact that has accelerated because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It focuses specifically on the relationships that Spanish SMEs establish with their clients, banking institutions or other agents in the environment, proposing possible future scenarios to support the sustainable management of their activity. Methodologically, an analytical, contemporary and multiple case study with generic scope is developed based on companies integrated in representative sectors. It is concluded that Spain still has a long way to climb both economically, politically and socially, since cash continues to play a crucial role in its economy.
