Abstract

The book Cien hogueras. Flamencos, hippies y poetas en la Andalucía contracultural provides for two overviews of the most subversive and heterodox demonstrations of Andalusian music and literature during the last decades of Francoist dictatorship and the beginning of the Spanish democracy. The author, Antonio Orihuela, analyses with precision and agility the search for a revolutionary horizon for flamenco and poetry in the context of the modernisation of a social structure such as the Andalusian one. This task included the process of study and revalorization of the autochthonous tradition, which meant rescuing flamenco and copla in order to give them back to the popular classes and marginalised groups. Moreover, these were times of experimentation, contact and mixing with other forms of expression and life from abroad, such as the hippie movement, rock styles or avant-garde trends. In short, this is an important work with an essayistic feature which helps to understand the cultural, social and political transformations that took place during the Andalusian transition. At the same time, Orihuela’s book proposes a critical reflection on the present time, which has seen so many promises of change, renewal and loyalty to the roots flourishing and being buried.
