Abstract

By the beginning of the 18th century, the urban structure of Seville had changed very little with respect to the medieval city. It was in this century that it was to be substantially altered and its network of streets modernised, with the disappearance of old buildings, many dating back to the Muslim period, as was the case of the archway of San Miguel. However, the majority of these reforms are not the fruit of a genuine urban development policy, following clearly established projects, but the result of fortuitous causes, such as the earthquake of 1755, together with the considerable age of the constructions themselves.
