Abstract

In the context of the cultural flourishing of post-reform China in the 1990s, contemporary writer Lin Bai stood out by addressing lesbian love in her novels A War of One's Own (1994) and Water in a Bottle (1993). Her courageous exploration of female homosexuality was groundbreaking and expanded the horizons of contemporary Chinese women's literature. However, social and cultural limitations became apparent in the protagonists of her stories, who experienced resistance and fear towards same-sex love, leading to personal tragedies. This representation of social homophobia and internal struggle invites us to reflect on the challenges and obstacles faced by lesbians in present-day Chinese society.
