According to the philosophy of nature inaugurated by some Presocratic thinkers, by Leucippus and Democritus (who integrated some Eleatic and Pythagorean elements) the analysis of the Universe would not mean an infinite regress but would end in ultimate unities, the atoms. The problem is the following: If there are such ultimate components, then how should we conceive them so that natural systems, irrespective of their level of emergence for instance, inert, animated, sensible, rational have the properties and behaviour revealed by our experience? In order to get an idea of the answer, I put forward what has to be here a brief account and assessment of some major solutions: the atoms of ancient thinkers, the atom according to modern science, the Leibnizian Monads and the Whiteheadian actual entities. Finally, I call attention to a series of aporias of atomism, followed by a list of properties the ultimate components of the Universe, if they exist, should have or satisfy, so that nature be as it is in all its emergent strata.
