Abstract

This paper shows five different forms to understand the body that can be found in Sade’s Work: the body as an abyss, as sex, as nature, as an eîdos and as a sign. These are five ways that lead into nothingness. The sadian libertine looks for his own body by denying the bodies of other people. This annihilating action is a search of freedom. A freedom that recognizes itself only in nothingness. We could see here the appearance of a main character in nineteen century European philosophical scene: the Spirit (Geist).
