Abstract

This paper examines Walter Benjamin's final book published during his lifetime, Deutsche Menschen, a compilation of letters from German personalities of the 18th and 19th centuries. Our hypothesis posits that within this text, Benjamin's conception of history becomes tangible, showcasing the dialectic between destruction and salvation. Simultaneously, it delves into anthropological motifs such as love, friendship and family, which are integral to his materialism. Consequently, we aim to scrutinize Benjamin's stance on the legacy of humanism, considering the interplay of public history and private life in the dynamics of destruction, salvation, and political construction.
