Rilke bumped into Spinoza supposedly through Goethe. The poet is surprised at the points of coincidence that he shares with the philosopher. Searching for the reasons for this fascination involves the risk of assimilating two very different authors: Spinoza seeking the transparency of geometry to dissect human affects, Rilke loving darkness as the only source of novelty. However, in their idea of God, they don't seem to be that far apart, which is what this article tries to demonstrate.
