This article examines universal basic income as an emerging social right in the Mexican context, in the face of the structural challenges posed by the technological revolution. It departs from the premise that automation, digitalization, and the expansion of platform-based work generate labor exclusion and intensify precariousness, thereby undermining the viability of traditional contributory social security schemes. The objective is to analyze the feasibility of basic income as a universal and progressive protection mechanism capable of addressing these transformations. The methodology is
qualitative, grounded in an exegetical and comparative analysis of normative sources, specialized legal doctrine, and international experiences. The study is organized into six sections that address conceptual foundations, technological impacts, Mexico’s structural realities, and current debates. The article concludes that basic income represents a substantive alternative for rethinking social rights in Mexico while raising critical questions about the possibilities of its materialization.
