“MON DIEU, ISN’T MODELING MUSSOLINI ENOUGH FOR ONE WOMAN?”: PRIMO DE RIVERA PORTRAYED BY NANCY COX-MCCORMACK

Abstract

Nancy Cox-McCormack, American sculptress and writer, traveled to Spain between 1925 and 1926. During her stay in the country, she made one of the first busts of Miguel Primo de Rivera, whose authorship was unknown. Furthermore, in 1927, she published her travel book Pleasant Days in Spain where she described her perception of Spain, the process of modeling the bust, and the impression she had of the dictator. The purpose of this research is to study Cox-McCormack’s work, both written and sculptural, and to relate it to other works she did to portray relevant figures of the time, as well as to other images that were created of Primo de Rivera.
