Abstract

Cult and devoutness to Eucharist have played a major role in the creation of importan! works of art through the ages. Specially remarkable are the monstrances, intended for the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament for the adoration of the faithful. Although the existence of medieval monstrances in Spain has been figured, these silversmith's works became really significan! when a fashion seems to have been introduced in the XVlth century of constructing ostensoria of enormous size, standing severa[ feet in height. In Cordoba, as in man y other cities in the country, this type of monstrances were created as well. Essentially, their schemes derive from the Enrique de Arfe' s great monstrance, although they incorporate sorne aesthetic changes typical of the period when they were made. Conserved monstrances from XVIth century to XlXth are analyzed here.
