Abstract

The sun and the moon images within the artistic representations of the crucifixión appear since the sixth century. There have been a lot of theological interpretations and Christian symbolims about this iconography. These interpretations will be exposed, reviewed and opposed to the defense of the heritage or the reminiscence of the ancient pagan forms. Finally, the different iconographic forms of both heavenly bodies will be analysed as far as the aforementioned representations of the crucifixion are concemed,as well as derivations in subjects, location and iconology.
