This paper studies the contract signed by Francisco de Rioja, a prominent scholar in seventeenthcentury Seville, for the altarpiece of what would be his funerary chapel at Saint Joseph’s Convent (“Las Teresas”). The contract shows Martínez-Montañés as the author of the design for this altarpiece, just as it reveals the great infl uence that his friend Francisco Pacheco, a scholarly painter, could have exerted in this assignment by Rioja.
