Many foreign artists managed to establish themselves in Nueva España (New Spain, Mexico) despite the fact that there were serious restrictions on foreigners at the time. Mid-seventeenth century records attest the work of Manuel Bautista in Vera Cruz as sculptor and altarpiece assembler. He worked mostly for saint Francis’s Convent and the Church of the Jesuits.
