Abstract

The presbyter José María Gómez Espinosa de los Monteros died on 25th December 1879 in La Algaba, leaving the Cathedral of Seville one of the most important bequests of the 19th century, not only in terms of the quality of some of the works, but also on account of its volume, consisting of 28 paintings in total. The present paper completes the identifi cation of these paintings in today’s cathedral collection. Among the works bequeathed, we fi nd Saint Peter freed by the Angel by Valdés Leal, Abraham and the Three Angels by Diepenbeek or Jacob blessing his Children by van Lint. In addition, this paper also identifi es another painting, The Virgin with St Dominic and St Francis by Llanos Valdés, donated by the Canon Celestino Mateos del Parque in 1881.
