Abstract

A new cycle of paintings representing the Holy Family, the Holy Trinity, the Crucifixion ant the Lamentation of Christ by Juan Simón Gutiérrez (1643-1718) was recently discovered at the Cathedral of Córdoba and in a private Cordobean collection. Juan Simón Gutiérrez was considered one of the closest follower of the great Sevillian baroque painter Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (1617-1682). The physiognomic features of his figures and the “Murillesque” pictorial language of his style has allowed to identify a large number of paintings over the last ten years. This article examines the mentioned canvases which are confronted with the four flemish engravings used by the artist as a source of inspiration.
