Although the tradition of sacramental chapels with autonomous development and intriguing ornamentation is not deeply rooted in Málaga, the parish church of los Mártires was enlarged in the 18th c. with a new transept and chancel which, given the centralized structure, its iconography and symbolism, and the importance of its promoters, the Brotherhood of the Santísimo Sacramento, can be regarded as a sacramental chapel but may also have the status of a martyrium dedicated to Saints Cyriacus and Paula, patrons of the city. The project was by the Cathedral architect, Antonio Ramos, and the inauguration took place in 1777, after the rococo decoration had been extended to the body of the naves.
