The contents of the major Washington exhibition are examined in an analysis of both the general significance of the event and its artistic aspects, which were of particular interest dueto the quality of the exhibits. In a sense, the very title of the exhibition would appear not only to stress the crucial nature of the discovery of America by the Spanish, but also to present it in the context of other events of the period, which were the result of the scientific and humanistic spirit which ran through Europe in the late 15th century and throughout the 16th.
