Abstract

Manuel Ferrando remains to this day an ill-defined and controversial figure in the field of Hispanic Renaissance painting. This article sets out the current state of research and goes on to attempt to clarify the problems surrounding the artist by placing the works attributed to him in Mallorca in the local artistic context and, finally, by examining in depth his mode of expression, with special emphasis on the connexion between the latter and Renaissance tenebrism.
