UN DIBUJO CASI INÉDITO DE JUAN DE ARFE

Abstract

A design by Juan de Arfe which accompanied an autograph letter has remained unpublished since it was reproduced, without the letter, in 1915. The text of the letter itself, although incomplete, was well known to art historians. The second part of the text, referring to the execution of the statues of the Duke and Duchess of Lerma and family at prayer, has often been cited, but the first part of the letter with dedication, description and explanation of the accompanying design has hardly been considered. The design and complete text of the letter are published together here, thus adding a new design to the known corpus of Juan de Arfe.
