Abstract

Vicente Espinel is generally known for his contributions to literature, both narrative and poetic. However, in musical, particularly guitar circles, it is the controversy surrounding his possible intro­duction of the fifth string to the instrument which is of particular interest. In this study we deal with the matter in depth, achieving a clearer picture of his personality through his writings and those of his contemporaries. We also analyse the tuning of instruments of the lute type, as an essential step to­wards our conclusions.
